4 stars from me
Felix did an amazing job at making this story creepy and making it hard to sleep at night while reading it. The story follows a native folklore story and brings an interesting idea to life. The beginning of the book was the scariest in my opinion because the prologue and the following two chapters are eerie and creepy with the story of someone watching through the windows at night. The Imposter character is a very interesting concept and one that I think a lot of folklores have in their own version. The ending was not what I expected, and I understand why people gave it 3 stars just because of the ending. As a reader in the horror genre, we expect to not have a happy ending or a resolution to the horror, we want it to continue and be the worst possible outcome for the characters. However, Stolen Tongues had an ending where you face your demons and find relief from the grief that you have been hiding deep down inside yourself for years. It allowed the main character to find relief from the Imposter and for that, I think readers didn’t enjoy the ending. I personally would have also liked a more horrific ending, but I can see why Blackwell made the ending the way he did.
Stolen Tongues Synopsis:
“A romantic cabin getaway doesn’t go exactly as planned.
High up on the windswept cliffs of Pale Peak, Faye and Felix celebrate their new engagement. But soon, a chorus of ghastly noises erupts from the nearby woods: the screams of animals, the cries of children, and the mad babble of a hundred mournful voices. A dark figure looms near the windows in the dead of night, whispering to Faye. As the weather turns deadly, Felix discovers that his terrified fiancée isn’t just mumbling in her sleep – she’s whispering back.“
